Lighted School House
Our Mission:
Lighted School House will empower students socially and academically by providing unique, extended-day learning opportunities in partnership with the school, families, and the community.
A Typical Day
- Healthy Snack and Recess
- Academic and Enrichment Hours
- 5:00-6:00 - Supervised Recreation in Gym
Students work with classroom leads or certified teachers on homework assignments during the academic hour and participate in skill-building activities designed to complement their day-school learning.
During enrichment hour, students participate in activities that expand on learning in ways that differ from the school day's methods. They often are interactive and project-focused.
Who We Serve
Lighted School House is funded through a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the Department of Public Instruction. The program began at Webster Stanley Elementary School in 2003 and expanded to include Washington Elementary School in 2009. Emmeline Cook was awarded the grant in 2012. Merrill Elementary started a program in 2013, Roosevelt in 2015, and Smith/Jefferson in 2016. We currently are at Emmeline Cook, Jefferson, Menominee, Oaklawn, Read, and Roosevelt.
The program serves any student that needs a safe and fun place to go after school. Programs are designed to enrich learning experiences in an afterschool setting.
What is a 21st Century Community Learning Center?
This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students reach state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs, and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children
